Is your business bold - and disruptive?

The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment Leo Varadkar, and the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI) has now opened applications for the third call of the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF). The €500m fund has already allocated funding of €140m to 43 ground-breaking projects in two earlier rounds of funding.

These projects covered technologies such as medical devices, cell and gene therapies, quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

The deadline for applications is the 17th December 2020, 3pm Irish Time so don’t hang around!

What the DTIF Call 3 is all about

The third call for DTIF funding is about collaborations that demonstrate disruptive technology innovation. These collaborations must be powerful enough to change the way a sector operates, alter markets and bring about new products and business models.

Funding applications for this third round must relate to the Research Priority Areas 2018-2023. Particular interest is given to larger projects boasting a strong enterprise agenda, and that bring positive economic effects to the Irish economy in the medium and long term. Ideally, products must be innovative and enterprise-driven with robust R&D themes. Commercial impacts should be seen within 3 to 7 years of the project being completed.

Who is eligible?

We recommend you thoroughly go through all the rules of eligibility before making your application (get in touch with us and we’ll go through this with you). Notably, applicants should look closely at the type of collaborations appropriate to DTIF round 3. They should have:

  • Larger sized collaborations where projects require funding from DTIF of €1.5 million minimum over 3 years
  • A “lead partner” plus a strong project management structure focussed on deploying and developing disruptive technologies in Ireland that bring positive medium and long-term impacts across the country
  • Collaborations with at least 3 independent partners seeking funding from the DTIF. Two of these must be enterprises and one must be an SME34

Enterprises can claim a maximum of 50% of their qualifying costs, however Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) can receive as much as 100% of costs. However, RPOs cannot receive more than 50% of the entire DTIF grant aid to the project in any collaboration, for example RPO funding must not exceed the qualifying funding awarded to the enterprise partners.

What is the application process and what are the requirements?

Lead Partners should apply online using the application system (OLS). All questions and sections must be completed. Just something to note, you can fill in part of the application before saving it and coming back to it later. However, once you’ve formally submitted the application then no further changes can be made.
