What kinds of R&D grants does Enterprise Ireland offer?

Among offers to accelerate the green transition and expansion grants, Enterprise Ireland offers many options for companies to fund their innovation:

Innovation Voucher: €5,000 voucher for SMEs to collaborate with a research institution on a new idea or solution.

Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF): Supports collaborative projects that apply disruptive technologies in key areas like healthcare, AI, and sustainability.

Agile Innovation Fund: Fast-track funding for short-term R&D projects under €300,000.

RD&I (Research, Development & Innovation) Fund: Supports larger, strategic R&D projects to develop new products, processes, or services.

Innovation Partnership Programme: Co-funding for collaborative R&D between companies and research institutions.

Who is eligible for Enterprise Ireland grants?

Eligibility depends on the specific grant, but typically includes Irish-owned startups, SMEs, and large enterprises that are focused on innovation and export growth.

Specific programs exist for:

  • High Potential Start-Ups (HPSUs)
  • Early-stage businesses (e.g. CSF, Innovation Voucher)
  • Established companies looking to grow or innovate

The project must align with the purpose of the grant—e.g., R&D, innovation, market entry, job creation, or capital investment. Most importantly, the project needs to be commercially viable and have a clear implementation plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most grants are non-repayable, although some supports (like equity investment in HPSUs) involve a return for the agency.

There are many different types of grants and support available from Enterprise Ireland, some of which have a streamlined application process, such as the Agile Innovation Fund, and some of which require weeks of work, like the Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund.

The evaluation process depends on the funding programme. For example, the Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) Fund considers applications for funding on a monthly call basis. Completed online applications, including the project costs, financial data, project plan, and supporting documents, are assessed technically and commercially.

The assessors visit applicants, and both successful and unsuccessful applications will be informed by letter.

Your Enterprise Ireland application is more likely to succeed if it:

  • Shows how the project results in a real innovation and doesn’t replicate products currently on the market.
  • Provides a convincing company description which explains why you are more likely to succeed than a competitor.
  • Includes a clear and thorough description of the business opportunity, not just the project description.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the target market, including commercialisation and competitor information.

It provides up to €20,000 in funding to help SMEs collaborate with a registered knowledge provider (e.g., a university or research centre) to explore innovative ideas.

This fund offers fast-track support (up to 50% of eligible costs) for companies undertaking short-term R&D projects with costs under €300,000.

An HPSU is an early-stage, export-oriented company with the potential to develop innovative products or services for global markets and to create 10+ jobs and €1 million in sales within 3–4 years.

This fund supports substantial R&D projects over €300,000 that aim to create new or improved products, processes, or services.
